Aja B Stubbs - Belle-Noir Communications

Throughout history, in every era there have been leaders and activists who spearheaded a movement. When history is written Ms. Aja B. Stubbs will be added to that list of advocates for her role in transitioning the plus community through her company, Belle-Noir Communications and its entities. The journey began in September 2003 when a group of plus size women of Color in a Yahoo Group were discussing the lack of positive representations of plus size women. Print magazines for plus size women were folding and those for women of Color were lacking in their coverage of the plus community as a whole. At the same time, presentations of plus size women online —particularly plus size women of Color-- was mostly exploitation on adult entertainment sites. With much determination, Belle-Noir E-zine launched in November 2003. After four successful years as a bi-monthly e-zine, Belle-Noir transitioned to a blog format in an effort to provide "bakery fresh" content to our readers on a daily basis. Belle-Noir has grown from a bi-monthly e-zine into Belle-Noir Communications, home to: Belle-Noir Magazine, the bi-monthly digital life style magazine created with the plus size woman of Color in mind and at heart; Phat Poetry–A poetry/spoken word event created to feature poetry for, by and about plus size men and women; and Curves & Cocktails: The Ultimate Girls Night Out for Women with Curves shopping & socializing event. The dream that started in 2003 is now recognized by the entire plus community as Belle-Noir Communications has been affiliated with Gwen DeVoe’s Full Figured Fashion Week, and has partnered as Media Sponsor for Kiss the Curves and The International Fuller Woman Expo. Aja has proven to be one of the first voices and advocates for Everyday Plus Size Women of all races, but especially Women of Color. Her mission is to show the plus size community and the world that all plus size women; regardless of social, career or economic status, are beautiful. Aja lives by her daily mantra, “Love the Big Beautiful You!” Born and raised in The Bronx, New York, Aja is a graduate of Marymount Manhattan College. She proudly still calls the Bronx home.
